Teeth are lost for many reasons and missing teeth can limit the ability to chew food properly, in addition to causing cosmetic concerns. There are several options to replace missing teeth and one option many choose are dental implants.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a replacement for the root and is placed into the jaw. Several types of dental restorations are placed upon dental implants including crowns and bridges.
Why choose dental implants?
Dental Implants are sometimes considered the better choice to replace teeth. Bridges and partial dentures are supported by other teeth, however with dental implants support from other teeth is not needed. Other benefits include preventing further bone loss, improved appearance, and the ability to enjoy your favorite foods.
How do I know if I can have dental implants?
An exam and radiographs are first required to assess as each mouth as each situation is unique. Many times a 3D scan is taken and the jaw is studied with specialized dental implant software to help with decisions. Once the initial analysis is complete a consultation can be planned to review the information and explain the options available along with the therapy steps.
How long does it take?
Sometimes, if all is just right, a temporary crown or bridge can be placed on the dental implant(s) at the same time the implant is placed. In other cases there may be time needed between the placement of the implant and final appointment due to factors such as the need for bone grafting, or simply time for the bone to accept and lock onto the implant.
How Does a Dental Implant Compare to Natural Teeth?
In many cases implants are considered stronger than natural teeth. Once the final bridge or crown has been placed you will enjoy not only an aesthetically pleasing smile, but also all of your favorite foods!
